Case Projects
Case Project 2-1: Installation for a Small Organization
Since Jeff is only a part time administrator, the installation method he uses has to be simple. Jeff likely does not have the time or skills to start planning and implementing relatively complex installations such as distribution share installations or image-based installation. Jeff should use CD boot installations. Any required device drivers and applications can be installed after installation. This is reasonable because the number of installations here will be small.
A second alternative for Jeff is to order new computers with Windows 7 already installed and only implement Windows 7 as new computers are purchased.
Case Project 2-2: Using Image-based Installation
Superduper Lightspeed Computers has a high volume and wide variety of systems to build. It is not reasonable to perform CD boot installations for this number of computers because CD boot installations cannot add additional drivers that may be required.
Image-based installation allows Windows Vista to be installed quickly, and include applications. If the computers are configured to enter audit mode when Sysprep is run before imaging, then an unattend.xml file can be used to add drivers from a distribution share during the auditSystem configuration pass. This allows different hardware to be implemented over time without recreating and retesting the images to ensure they function. Only the unattend.xml file needs to be changed to reflect the additional hardware.
A second alternative for updating drivers is to use DISM to add any new drivers to the original image. Then the new drivers will be automatically used during the specialization pass.
Case Project 2-3: Migrating User Settings and Files
If the laptops are upgraded to Windows 7 then the applications, application configuration, user settings, and user data will all be migrated to Windows 7 automatically. Since the laptop computers have current hardware this is the fastest and easiest way to install Windows 7 on the laptops.
If a clean installation of Windows 7 is performed, then either Windows Easy Transfer or USMT must be used to transfer user settings and files. However, Windows Easy Transfer and USMT cannot migrate applications. The applications will need to be reinstalled on the laptops after the clean installation. Since it is difficult to reinstall these applications, in this case it is worth the risk that an upgrade may be less stable than a clean installation.
Case Project 2-4: Installation for a Large Organization
Large organizations need to go through an extensive planning process before installing Windows 7. The planning process includes whether all applications are supported and the best way to get Windows 7 on each person’s computer. In a large corporate environment the goal is to automate as much of the installation process as possible.
A CD boot installation is not realistic in a large environment. It requires too much user intervention. This type of installation will likely only be used for initial testing.
A distribution share installation is reasonable for some organizations. An answer file can be used to automate the installation process and add additional drivers as required. However, a distribution share installation does not include applications. Since many applications in a corporate environment are standardized and used by everyone in the organization, the applications should be included in the Windows 7 installation.
Image-based installation allows you to include applications as part of the initial installation when the image is applied. If necessary, multiple images can be created with different applications.
